Green Bay will be the 34-year-old's sixth stop as a head coach of an arena/indoor football team, most recently heading the River City Rage of the IFL last season. He also served as the head coach of the Rock River Raptors (2006-07), the Richmond Bandits (2004-05) and the Mohegan Wolves (2003-04), which later moved to Manchester. Richards has amassed a career 60-28 record.
“Since this team came here in 2003, everyone has tried to put a winner on the field and that’s not going to change,” Richards said. “Winning is the only thing I care about. Period. I’ve done that everywhere I’ve been.”
Richards received his first head coaching job in 2002, when he became the head coach and defensive coordinator of the Charleston Swamp Foxes (af2).
New Blizzard owner Jeff Royle said he received upwards of 25 applications for the head coaching vacancy and interviewed around 10 candidates before settling in Richards.
“He’s just a guy I gelled with great on the phone and his resume speaks for itself," Royle said. "He’s a young guy who has the time and efforts — with this transition — to put a good product on the field.”
