OGDEN -- The Ogden Knights named arena football veteran Doug Coleman as its new head coach and director of player personnel for the upcoming American Indoor Football League season.
"Doug is the only man I would want to lead the Knights in 2010," team president and general manager Travis Vance said. "I believe that coach Coleman will put the most competitive team on the field and give us our best chance to bring the AIFA championship to Ogden. Doug and I have history winning championships together and that's what we are looking to do as we partner up again."
Coleman spent two of the last three years adding to his coaching resume after a impressive playing career within the indoor football setting. He was offensive coordinator with the Louisiana Swashbucklers of the IFL in 2006, and an assistant coach with the Boise Burn of the af2 in 2007.
Coleman played eight years as a quarterback within different indoor leagues. Starting out in his home state of Louisiana, Coleman won a league championship with the Louisiana Bayou Beast of the RFL, all while posting a 15-1 record.
After playing in other leagues such as the RFL, SFL and af2, Coleman finally settled into the National Indoor Football League in 2004-2005. His first NIFL season came with the Houma Bayou Bucks where he led the team to a 12-3 record.
His second season in the NIFL as a player came with the Tri-Cities Fever in 2005 where he and the Fever won the NIFL Championship in their inaugural season.
Vance was a member of the front office staff for the Tri-Cities Fever during that season and thinks that with the help of Coleman once again, the fresh-look Knights have a chance to bring home a championship to the city of Ogden.
"I know the type of leader Doug was on the playing field the year we won the NIFL championship in Tri-Cities and I have complete faith in his ability to lead as a head coach," Vance said.
Coleman was raised in White Castle, La., where he was a four-year starting quarterback at White Castle High and was named a blue chip prospect his senior year after three consecutive District MVP seasons. He played for Eastern New Mexico University from 1990-1992.
