www.elpasotimes.com/sports/ci_12956827EL PASO -- As he began the process of putting together the El Paso Generals' first-ever roster, Brian Brents and his staff started in the typical way.
They identified a corp off established indoor stars they were familiar with and recruited them heavily. They then padded out the roster with rookies and unknowns, knowing they would need to unearth several gems for a special season.
Their 13-2 mark speaks to how well that all came together, and for a snapshot of what has the team in the Intense Conference championship game, defensive back Sam Smith and defensive lineman Ron Ellington are the microcosms.
Smith is the established star who followed Brents from Tupelo, Miss. Ellington, a first-team all-league selection, was a prospect from Division II Catawba with two games of indoor pro experience before the season began.
Together, they are two big reasons the Generals are two games away from an IFL title in their inaugural season.
"We had some guys who were veterans guys who played well together, then they meshed well with the new guys and that's all been a key to our success," Brents said.
In some ways, Smith and Ellington are analogous to offense stars Tommy Jones, the veteran quarterback with a championship ring, and young breakout receiver Deangelo Woodie.
"Ellington was a big surprise," Brents said. "When he came in, we didn't know where to put him, at linebacker or defensive end, but he's been great. He's been the Deangelo Woodie of the defense. He's been a great pickup."......article continues in link.
