HOUMA — Whether they like it or not, the Houma Conquerors will be the underdog in Monday’s Southern Indoor Football League first-round playoff game against the Louisiana Swashbucklers.
Houma, which clinched the fourth and final spot in the SIFL playoffs with a 3-8 record, will face a Swashbucklers team that finished the regular season as the league’s best team with an 10-1 record.
The Lake Charles-based Swashbucklers also swept the regular season meetings with the Conquerors, winning the three games by a combined score of 140-72.
Despite having the odds stacked against them, Houma interim coach Clyde “C.J.” Maiden said the underdog role is a perfect for the Conquerors.
“As I’ve told the guys during a team meeting on Tuesday, the other team has everything to lose and we have everything to gain,” Maiden said.
“They’ve beat us three times already, and I think it’s our time to beat them.”
And the Conquerors will get their chance during Monday’s game, which will start at 7 p.m. in the Lake Charles Civic Center.
Maiden said in order for the Conquerors to pull off an upset, they must protect the football. In the three regular season meetings against Louisiana, the Conquerors turned the ball over 11 times and committed 30 penalties.
“If we can cut down on the mistakes and stay focused, we can play with those guys,” Maiden said.
“I feel if we can keep the game close going into the fourth quarter, I think we can beat those boys. I really do.”
Houma had its chances to beat Louisiana during the regular season. During their July 3 game in the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, the Conquerors jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter but later fumbled the ball three times, which helped the Swashbucklers escape with a 51-40 win.
Although the Swashbucklers have never lost a home playoff game in their history, the Conquerors believe they can pull off the upset. ......article continues in link.
