HOUMA — When Houma Conquerors quarterback Omar Haugabook speaks, the team listens.
Houma running back Michael Burks said Haugabook leads the Conquerors not so much through words, but by his example on the field.
And now, the Conquerors are in the Southern Indoor Football League playoffs and will face the Louisiana Swashbucklers at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Lake Charles.
“He is very humble and very sound, just a real good guy,” Burks said. “You can’t think of anything negative to say about Omar because there is nothing negative about him.”
Conquerors interim coach C.J. Maiden saw those qualities in Haugabook when he convinced the Troy University alum to come to Houma and be a part of the team, which was beginning its inaugural season in the Southern Indoor Football League.
“I called a friend of mine who coaches the Florida Firecats (an arenafootball2 team), and he told me he worked out a real good quarterback (Haugabook) the day before,” Maiden said. “Omar was a little leery about playing (in Houma) because he had an agent, but I assured him he would have a chance to be a starting quarterback. He drove 12 hours from central Florida to play for us, and the rest is history.”
Maiden said he also made a vow to Haugabook’s mother when Omar arrived.
“His mom said to me, ‘Coach I just want to ask you one thing: please take care of my boy,’” Maiden said. “I assured her he would be well-taken care of and he would be part of a championship program at one point or another.”
The former Sun Belt Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 said his relationship with Maiden has been a special one ever since he signed with the Conquerors.
“I call him Pop,” Haugabook said. “He’s the reason I’m here.”......article continues in link.
