www.houmatoday.com/article/20090716/OPINION01/907169955/1166/SPORTS?Title=Conquerors-overcame-the-oddsOnce upon a time, the Houma Conquerors were stuck at the bottom of the Southern Indoor Football League standings with an 0-5 record.
At the time, the chances of the team making the playoffs were pretty much nonexistent.
But in the second half of the regular season, the Conquerors won three of their last six games to put themselves in position for an SIFL playoff berth.
And thanks to the Austin Turfcats’ 60-28 win over the Texas Hurricanes, the Conquerors clinched the fourth and final playoff spot by defeating the Acadiana Mudbugs 40-28 in the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center on Saturday.
Houma (3-8 overall) will now travel to Lake Charles to play the top-ranked Louisiana Swashbucklers (10-1) at 7 p.m. Monday in the first round of the playoffs. With a win, the Conquerors will advance to the SIFL championship game to face either Austin or Acadiana.
It was impressive to see the Conquerors battle their way through adversity to make the playoffs.
There weren’t a lot of people who thought the Conquerors could actually turn things around, but the coaching staff and players continued to play through the tough times, and now, they have been rewarded with a playoff berth. ......article continues in link.
