www.elpasotimes.com/sports/ci_12814814EL PASO -- If the El Paso Generals were an NFL team, they wouldn't be offering much of a show this week in their meaningless regular-season finale in San Angelo.
They'd play the starters for a series or two, relax the rest of the way and let their minds wander ahead to the playoffs.
"It's a little difficult for us to do that, only suiting up 21 players," coach Brian Brents said. "But it would be nice to get a good lead and let the backup quarterback in there. We'll try to rest when we can, but we're still going in with the mind-set we want to win the ballgame."
That, though, is almost purely from a mental standpoint, as there are almost no playoff implications in this game.
El Paso goes to San Angelo with an 11-2 mark, a Lone Star Division championship and a first-round bye, but no realistic hope of catching Billings for the Intense Conference No. 1 seed.
Even looking beyond that, there almost is no way El Paso could fall below the United Conference champion for potential home field in a title game.
San Angelo (5-8), meanwhile, has clinched a playoff berth, but it can't catch Abilene for home field in the first round.
What does play into the way El Paso treats this game is the fact that it won't open the playoffs for another two weeks.
"We've got to get in a mind-set to get ready for the playoffs," Brents said. "Normally, I hate to take a week off before the playoffs, but we have a lot of little injuries.......article continues in link.
