HOUMA — Houma Conquerors owner Franklin Thomas said on Tuesday night that their victory over the Lafayette Bayou Bulls last week will count in the Southern Indoor Football League standings, though the Bulls are not a part of the first-year league.
The Conquerors were scheduled to play the North Texas Crunch in the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center last Saturday, but Thomas said last-minute transportation issues prevented the Crunch from traveling to Houma.
With the help of the SIFL, the Conquerors found a last-minute substitute opponent in the Bayou Bulls, an outdoor football team that plays in the Southern American Football League. Houma dominated the game and ran away with a 66-0 win.
The SIFL originally ruled that the win would not count in the Conquerors’ overall season record.
But after arguments from the Conquerors, Thomas said the league decided to count the game in its official league standings.
“Our main argument was that we couldn’t control what happened to the North Texas Crunch,” Thomas said. “We played against the team that came to play us (the Bayou Bulls), and we won. So a win is a win. Regardless of whether it was the Bulls or the North Texas Crunch, we still played that night and we won the game. It would have been unfair for them to say that the game didn’t count because it was out of our control.”
With the win, Houma improved to 2-7 overall and moved in front of the Texas Hurricanes (1-6) for the fourth and final spot in the SIFL playoffs.
“It was really important because that win over the Bayou Bulls is a big confidence booster for the entire organization to know that if the playoffs start tomorrow, our team would be in,” Thomas said.
With two home games remaining in their regular season schedule against the Louisiana Swashbucklers (Friday) and the Acadiana Mudbugs (July 11), the Conquerors can clinch a playoff berth by winning one of their final two games.
They can also clinch if Texas loses its final three games against Acadiana (Sunday) and Austin (July 7 and 11).
But Thomas said the Conquerors want to take care of business themselves.
“We want to control our own destiny and seal the deal,” he said.
“We don’t want it to get where we’re sitting around hoping for the Texas Hurricanes to lose. We would like to win both of our next games or one of the last two. If that doesn’t happen, then we’ll take a playoff berth whichever way we can get it.”
