OGDEN -- Both on the field and off, it's been a busy spring for the Ogden Knights.
Ogden closes out the home portion of its inaugural American Indoor Football Association season tonight, hosting the New Mexico Wildcats at 7 p.m. at the Golden Spike Events Center.
With just two games to go -- Ogden finishes the season on July 4 at Wyoming -- Knights owner/coach Mike Mink isn't quite ready to post an evaluation on his squad.
"If we can close out the last two games with a couple of win, that would put as 5-2 in the second half or the season," Mink said as he put a cap on a 16-hour day setting up the field at the Weber County Fairgrounds. "In the first half of the season, we unfortunately has so many injuries that we couldn't get a rhythm going."
The Wildcats have been a good remedy for the Knights, whose three wins have come at the expense of the New Mexico squad. The last time the two teams met, Ogden delivered a 62-42 whipping.
Mink feels like the Knights' offense has made tremendous progress.
"Our scoring in the red zone is much-improved and our offensive line has come along," Mink said. He credited captains Clifton Buckway, Jason Hermansen, and James Owens with imacting the entire roster.
"The defense has improved a lot as well. If we can get a win here, it will help us maintain momentum.
Off the field, the Knights have been busy with several projects, visiting more than 25 local schools, hosting a fundraiser golf tournament in July, and hosting a car show this Monday (4 to 7 p.m.)
"We're looking to improve our attendance in years to come, but it takes a while," Mink said.
"A lot of folks didn't know who we were. It's a process."
Mink said the AIFA just announced an expansion team from Wenatchee, Wash., will join the West Division in 2010.
"And we're still looking for partners here in Ogden. We're looking for people to take on additional roles here," Mink said.......article continues in link.
