HOUMA — The Houma Conquerors can definitely say they had a rough week.
On Monday, the Conquerors came out flat and struggled in all phases of the game in a 41-16 loss to the Louisiana Swashbucklers. The loss dropped the Conquerors to 1-7 on the season.
Instead of getting time to lick their wounds, the Conquerors are quickly heading back onto the field to face another Southern Indoor Football League foe. The Conquerors will face the North Texas Crunch at 7 tonight at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. The game will be broadcast by 1490-AM.
After Monday’s dismal performance, Conquerors interim coach Clyde “C.J.” Maiden said he is hoping the short week helps the team.
“We didn’t play well in our last game, but hopefully with the short week, we’ll come back and play a much better ball game against North Texas,” Maiden said. “We need that win to keep our playoff hopes alive.”
The Conquerors are facing one of the “newer” teams in the SIFL. The Crunch joined the SIFL as a travel team on May 26 after the Florida Kings were expelled from the league.
Since joining the SIFL, the Crunch have lost games to the Austin Turfcats (71-15) and Acadiana Mudbugs (45-6).
The Crunch, however, fared better in the Independent Indoor Football Alliance, posting a 5-0 record before switching leagues. In 2008, the Crunch finished 8-3 and won the IIFA championship.
Former Nicholls State Colonel Joseph Robertson is a member of the Crunch. The New Orleans native played for the Colonels in the 1997 season.
Maiden said tonight’s game is key if the Conquerors want to remain in the SIFL playoff chase. The Conquerors are battling the Texas Hurricanes, formerly known as the Texas Pirates, for the league’s final playoff spot. The Hurricanes are currently 1-5 with three home games remaining to be played and a game with the Crunch that needs to be rescheduled.
“If we come to play, we can beat (the Crunch), and that could go a long way to making the playoffs,” Maiden said. “If our team makes the playoffs, I know we can surprise somebody.”......article continues in link.
