www.elpasotimes.com/sports/ci_12693416EL PASO -- The El Paso Generals still have a plate full of major goals in front of them. Most of the smaller ones, however, now are in their rear-view mirror.
A combination of their big victory at River City (suburban St. Louis) last weekend and Abilene's loss meant the first-year team has clinched the title of the Lone Star Conference, and with it a first-round bye and second-round home game.
That doesn't diminish the importance of the final three games, where El Paso will try to close down Billings' one-game lead for home field throughout the playoffs, but it's a fine feather nonetheless.
"It's always nice, especially winning a division as tough as this year with all the good teams in it," coach Brian Brents said. "We've got bigger goals, getting some more home field playoff games.
"Our guys are so focused on the week-to-week, staying prepared."
El Paso has done a stellar job of that heading into a two-game homestand, which opens Saturday night against Colorado.
The Generals just completed a long road trip, sweeping Colorado and River City to improve their road mark to 4-2 and their overall mark to 9-2.
The 70-56 victory over River City marked perhaps their best four quarters of offense this season and put the team in a good frame of mind heading into a rematch with Colorado. "It's always good to get home playoff games," said quarterback Tommy Jones, who continues to polish his credentials as a league MVP candidate. "All the things we wanted are starting to fall into place."......article continues in link.
