www.bradenton.com/sports/story/1533703.htmlScorpions indoor football team to invade Bradenton By RYAN T. BOYD - rboyd@bradenton.com
The wait is over. Indoor football has landed at the Manatee Convention Center.
Alton Walker has tried for three years to make the convention center the home of the Florida Scorpions.
The lack of funds were a hold up. Conflicts with the season schedule was a hold up. And the collapse of a previous league was a hold up.
All of the red lights are now green, and the Scorpions, an indoor professional football squad, will make their home debut at 6 p.m. Friday against the Tampa Bay Tigers.
“This is almost like your kid being born,” said Walker, the team general manager/owner. “Your fiancee’ or your wife is pregnant and you are waiting and anticipating that day for that joy to come into the world. For me, it’s been since 2006, and now we are receiving our reward.”
The Scorpions, a member of the six-team American Professional Football League, bring a 4-1 record into their home opener after defeating the Florida Kings 34-2 on Saturday.
Walker said he wants to give players the opportunity to gain experience and exposure so they could some day have a chance to play at a higher level. Scorpions kicker Phil Caldwell, a resident of Manatee County, had a strong showing at the NFL Free Agent Combine earlier this month in Ohio, Walker said.
“If no other player on my team gets to go anywhere,” he said, “I was able to change one player’s life and give one player an opportunity. That is almost as good as having the first game at home.”
The Scorpions will play on a field that’s 66 yards long, including end zones that are eight yards deep. The team will play five of its final six regular season games at the convention center.
“To finally come home and play a game in front of the home fans is great,” said Scorpions running back/fullback Freddy Azofeifa. “It’s exciting to try and put on a good show for everybody.
“We are definitely focused. Of course, we want to get the win, but at the same time, we want to give back to the community and give them more value than what they paid to see us.”

An interesting note from the second article;
The Scorpions, a member of the six-team American Professional Football League, bring a 4-1 record into their home opener after defeating the Florida Kings 34-2 on Saturday.
