HOUMA — The Houma Conquerors lost their first game against the Louisiana Swashbucklers this season by 32 points and fell to 0-5 overall.
The Conquerors (1-6) have collected their only win since that May 23 loss, and they will have the chance for revenge at 6 p.m. Monday against the Swashbucklers (7-1) in the first of four straight home games in the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center to end the regular season.
Although the Lake Charles-based Swashbucklers boast the top-ranked offense and defense units in the Southern Indoor Football League, Conquerors interim coach Clyde “C.J.” Maiden said he is not convinced the Swashbucklers are unbeatable.
“I’m not going to say they’re the best team in the league until I play them,” Maiden said. “They are good because their record shows they’re good, but they’ve never played against me before, not as a coach.”
Maiden was just appointed to interim head coach on Monday when Franklin Thomas surrendered his coaching duties to focus solely on ownership. Wide receiver Clevan White said the team is already embracing Maiden’s no-nonsense approach to the game.
“I like his discipline a whole lot,” White said. “Without discipline, there’s not much of a team. Coach C.J. coming in with the old-school mentality and good discipline will keep us on our toes. I’ll take that any day.”
Maiden praised the performance of quarterback Omar Haughbook, who is No. 1 in the SIFL in passer efficiency with a 52.5 completion percentage. He said Haughbook will be a key factor in guiding the Conquerors to an upset Monday and propelling the team into the playoffs.
“He’s been kind of overlooked by the league,” Maiden said. “I can do some damage with the No. 1 quarterback against the No. 1 offense. Omar has been playing well all season; he’s just had some problems getting people to block for him. But I’m going to try to solidify that and get him some more time.”
In the first game between the two teams, the Conquerors failed to score a touchdown in the second half and did not force a single turnover.......article continues in link.
