HOUMA — Houma Conquerors owner Franklin Thomas announced his decision to relinquish his role as the team’s coach on Monday.
Thomas, who handled both roles since creating the team in November, said he decided to focus more on his job as the team’s owner and handed the coaching duties to assistant coach Clyde “C.J.” Maiden, who will serve as the Conquerors interim coach for the final four games of their inaugural Southern Indoor Football League regular season.
Maiden coached the team in Saturday’s 35-33 loss to the Acadiana Mudbugs in place of Thomas, who was in attendance.
“My main objective for the next four weeks is to work in the front office and to make sure everything goes right toward the end of the year so everything could be good for next year,” Thomas said.
The decision is one of many changes made by the Conquerors in recent weeks.
On June 3, they hired the Louisiana Sports and Entertainment Group, which is operated by former Houma Bayou Bucks general manager Travis Carrell, Kirk Bonvillain and Tate Boudreaux. The firm will handle the marketing, promotion and sales for the team.
Thomas, a Grambling State graduate who played one season each with the Detroit Lions (1991) and New Orleans Saints (1994) and later was a player/assistant coach with the now-defunct Bayou Bucks, started the Conquerors franchise as a SIFL charter member in November.
Since then, Thomas served as the head coach, general manager, president and handled the day-to-day business operations of the team.
He said the recent moves will make his job easier. ......article continues in link.
