HOUMA — In just a few days, the Houma Conquerors have gone from a franchise that had never won a game to a club with playoff aspirations.
The Conquerors (1-5) got the first win in franchise history last Saturday night following a 34-20 Southern Indoor Football League victory over the Texas Pirates at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.
"Getting that first victory was very important," Conquerors owner and coach Franklin Thomas said. "You can tell at practice that the guys are shining with confidence. Everyone is working with their heads up. Everybody is feeling good about themselves. Everyone in the organization is happy and looking forward to the next game."
That next game is at 7:05 tonight against the Acadiana Mudbugs (3-3) inside the Blackham Coliseum on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus.
With five games left in the regular season, Houma is a half game behind the Texas Pirates (1-4) for the fourth and final spot in the SIFL playoffs.
What has Thomas and the Conquerors really excited is the fact that after tonight, their final four games of the regular season are all at home.
"I told the guys last week that all great teams make their run toward the end of the season," Thomas said. "We went through a grueling road schedule at the beginning of the season where we played some of the best teams in the league. Now we have those same teams at home in the last four games of the season, and I think we can make a run (at the playoffs)."
Thomas said after tonight not having to travel for a while will be a welcomed break for the team.......article continues in link.
