EL PASO -- Last week theEl Paso Generals managed to fix an area of weakness: They completed a sweep of a two-game set when they beat San Angelo for the second consecutive week.
Now they get another chance to shake a bugbear.
El Paso has been mediocre on the road, and for the next two weeks, they are on the road. They are on a long, long road.
This week the destination is Fort Collins, Colo., and the Colorado Ice, a drive of about half a day by bus and a good warmup for the following week's trip to St. Louis.
"We've sat down as an entire coaching staff and talked about what we've done, what we're going to do," said coach Brian Brents, whose team is7-2 overall but just 2-2 on the road. "On Friday, instead of just getting to the hotel and walking through, we're going out and making the guys stretch and practice. We're going to add that phase. ...
"Everybody dreads that bus trip, so we have to keep their spirits up. When we get to the hotel, all we want to do is rest, but maybe we've been laying down too much."
"You never look forward to a long bus trip," quarterback Tommy Jones said. "But this is a different opportunity."
That it is, and that's the good news about this trip. El Paso has played San Angeo and Corpus Christi three times each, Abilene twice and Odessa once. The next four games are against teams from other divisions in the Indoor Football League, and teams from the Lone Star Division are just 1-5 out of conference.
"It's kind of like we've been playing the same teams over and over and over, now we get to play someone new," Brents said. "It's interesting, because right now the Lone Star Conference is 1-5 against teams from the North, and that's a challenge to overcome. We have four games, so maybe that will be .500 against the North when we're done.
"It's nice to play someone different. We can see where we stand as far as talent goes."......article continues in link.
