EL PASO - The only thing the El Paso Generals haven't done well in their inaugural Indoor Football League season is play well in the second game of a back-to-back.
That's been a problem because that's something they've had to do quite a bit of so far this year.
They are 0-2 on the back end of what can be called two-game series, 6-0 in all other games, and they'll put all that to the test when they play the San Angelo Stampede Express for the second time in seven days Saturday.
Now for the good news: The game is at the El Paso Coliseum, where the Generals are unbeaten in four outings in their brief history.
"It's good any time you get to play at home in front of a crowd, and our crowd has been the loudest and the rowdiest all year long," El Paso coach Brian Brents said. "It's tough to beat a team twice, much less back-to-back, so we have to stay focused and correct our mistakes and hopefully continue to come out on top.
"We're focused on the fact that we haven't beaten a team back-to-back this year, and we challenged (the players) this week. Our goal is to make a statement."
El Paso already has beaten San Angelo twice this season, but last week's win by the score of 78-63 was by far the closest home game the Generals have had.
Former Texas Tech star Sonny Cumbie, from Snyder, Texas, was effective in moving the Stampede Express and, for the first time in four home games, El Paso was in a two-touchdown hole early.
The Generals turned that around before halftime, but the early struggles are another thing to focus on.
"It took a little bit," Brents said. "They had a couple of plays that hurt us and took the momentum from us. But we know it's a four-quarter game, and eventually it came around. We talk about playing four quarters, and only once this year have we played four quarters.
"Sunny Cumbie was cool and collected there in the pocket. He can pick you apart and make plays downfield, so we have to get after him."......article continues in link.
