www.elpasotimes.com/sports/ci_12516262LAS CRUCES -- It doesn't have the glory of Division I football. It isn't the glamour of the NFL. Still, for seven former New Mexico State Aggie football players, the El Paso Generals have provided a platform to play the game they love, after their college eligibility has run out.
"It's different, but I'm enjoying it a lot," defensive lineman Oren Long said. "Maybe it's because I just got done playing football at NMSU. I do know it's a great time. I'd play for free if I had to."
Long, along with fellow defensive lineman Polo Gutierrez, offensive linemen Mike Martinez and Kyle Smith, linebackers Kramer Winningham and La'Auli Fonoti and defensive back Shakree Shabazz all are former Aggies who have made impacts for the Generals, a first-year team in the Indoor Football League (IFL).
"I didn't plan on playing," Gutierrez said. "I had some NFL opportunities fall through, I had some tryouts with Canadian teams that didn't work out.
"Now, I'm here. It's a chance for me to stay competitive, stay in shape and, most importantly, keep playing football."
The Generals are off to a good start this season -- a 6-2 record and a first-place standing in the five-team Lone Star Division heading into Saturday night's game against the San Angelo Stampede Express.......article continues in link.
