HOUMA — Houma Conquerors coach Franklin Thomas said his team needs to do one thing to get its first win of the season — put together a full 60 minutes of good football.
“We have to play 60 minutes of football, and that’s what I’m encouraging the guys to do,” Thomas said. “I’m challenging them to play 60 minutes of football. If we play 60 minutes of football, we have the talent and a team that can win games.”
The Conquerors (0-4) enter tonight’s game against the Louisiana Swashbucklers in search of their first win of the season.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Charles Civic Center
The Swashbucklers (3-1) are tied for the best record in the Southern Indoor Football League, and have won 20 of their last 21 games.
“They’ve been playing together for five years,” Thomas said. “The players, the coaching staff, they’ve been together. They’ve won two championships in the previous league that they played in. Whenever you get a team that’s been playing together that long ... and they’ve been winning, they have a confidence, they have a swagger about them.”
The Swashbucklers have lived up to their reputation.
They rank first in both total offense (179 yards per game) and total defense (72.2 ypg).
The Conquerors aren’t far behind, ranking second in total offense (176.2 ypg) and third in total defense (171.8 ypg).
Instead, it’s been turnovers and special teams play that has marred Houma. The Conquerors are the only team that’s played more than one game and have a negative turnover margin (minus-8), and in last week’s loss to Austin, the Conquerors gave up two touchdowns on missed field goal returns.......article continues in link.
