EL PASO -- The El Paso Generals face a unique opportunity Saturday night in Abilene -- a chance to put three games between themselves and the rest of the Lone Star Division of the Indoor Football league.
The Generals, rested and fresh after an open date, will take on the Abilene Ruff Riders Saturday in the Taylor County Expo Center. El Paso knocked off Abilene 58-36 in the El Paso County Coliseum two weeks ago. Abilene defeated Corpus Christi 48-37 last Saturday. The Generals enter the game at 5-1, while Abilene is second at 4-3, followed by San Angelo at 2-4 and both Corpus Christi and Odessa at 2-5.
"I think we had a good week off," El Paso coach Brian Brents said. "We were able to rest and relax a little, let some injuries heal. Coming back, we have fresh legs again. We've been watching film, correcting mistakes. Mainly, though, we'll concentrate on what we can do -- not what they do."
What El Paso does is score in bunches. The Generals are averaging almost 54 points a game. The Generals' one speed bump was a 37-17 loss at Corpus Christi, but they answered that with a resounding 68-16 win over the Hammerheads in the El Paso County Coliseum. Quarterback Tommy Jones leads the Generals, working with key targets DeAngelo Woodie and Lemans Casimer.
Abilene is led by former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter, who threw for five touchdowns against El Paso in the first meeting.
"Fortunately, they had a game they had to prepare for last week," Brents said. "They had to prepare for somebody else. But the main thing we need is to maintain our focus. The guys have really responded this week. We've divided our season into halves, and this was our halfway point. We started well, and now we want to finish strong."
A week off in the physical grind that is a football season always is a good thing. But is Brents concerned about his team losing a bit of its polish with the time off?
"I'm sure we will come out a little sluggish," Brents said. "But that is on the coaches, and that is why we need to make sure we call a good game in the first quarter."......article continues in link.
