The Maryland Maniacs fell behind the Saginaw Sting 13-0 in the first quarter on their home field at Show Place Arena on Saturday night. But they took control of the game with a big play on special teams and went on to a 40-13 victory, their sixth in a row after opening the Indoor Football League season 0-2.
The Sting scored a touchdown to take a 13-0 lead with 6 minutes, 31 seconds to go in the first quarter. But Jeff Overton returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards for a touchdown to put the Maniacs on the scoreboard. Darryl Overton had the first of his two touchdown runs with 10:59 to go in the second quarter, as Maryland tied the score at 13-13. The Maniacs took the lead for good three seconds before halftime on a 17-yard field goal by Dan Ennis.
Jamar Atkinson and Brandon Jones each registered safeties, as the Maniacs made it 20-16 by the early stages of the fourth quarter. Darryl Overton had a fourth-quarter touchdown run, and quarterback Bryson Spinner tossed two touchdown passes to Terry Moss in the final period.
Spinner completed 15 of 25 passes for 159 yards. Moss had eight catches for 100 yards. Darryl Overton carried six times for 65 yards.
The Maniacs outgained the Sting, 240-104. Christian Varner led the Maniacs' defense with five solo tackles and was in on three others. Mike Hill had three tackles and assisted on four others. The Maniacs' defense sacked Saginaw quarterback Daniel Southall five times. Atkinson had 2 1/2 sacks. Kevin Jones had 1 1/2, and Brandon Jones and Durand Roundtree each were credited with half a sack.
Maryland (6-2) is in second place in the IFL's Atlantic Division, trailing the River City Rage (7-2). River City, which beat the Maniacs in the season opener on March 29, suffered a 34-19 loss to the Rochester Raiders on Saturday. Rochester is the Maniacs' next opponent. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Show Place Arena. The Maniacs beat the Raiders, 41-32, in their last meeting on May 2.
