HOUMA — The first half hasn’t been kind to the Houma Conquerors this season.
In their first two Southern Indoor Football League games against the Texas Pirates and the Austin Turfcats, the Conquerors have been outscored 72-16 in the opening half of games, mostly due to turnovers and penalties.
The Conquerors’ first-half struggles are a big reason why they are 0-2 overall heading into today’s road game against the Acadiana Mudbugs in Lafayette, and if they want to get their first win in franchise history, playing strong in the first half is a must.
“We expect to play better than we did the first two games,” Conquerors owner/coach Franklin Thomas said. “We want to come out running instead of coming out sluggish the way we’ve been in the last couple of games. If we could keep it close in the first half, I think we would be in good shape. It’s very important that we get this win. We don’t want to start the season off 0-3.”
Today’s game will kickoff at 7:05 p.m. at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette.
The showdown with Acadiana (2-0 overall) is important because it is the first of a three-game road trip for the Conquerors, who are coming off a bye week. Houma will face the Turfcats in Austin on May 16 and the Louisiana Swashbucklers in Lake Charles on May 23. Those three teams have a combined 5-1 record.
“It’s tough having three straight road games, but road games always bring teams closer,” Thomas said. “We’re looking forward to having these three straight road games to find out what we’re about.”......article continues in link.
