The New Jersey Revolution crushed the Lehigh Valley Cardinals 69-24 on Saturday night at the Mennen Arena in Morris Township.
But the Revs, now 3-0, got off to a shaky start due to penalties.
"We played well enough to win despite a lot of penalties," said Collis Martin, Revolution wide receiver who scored three touchdowns.
"We came out a little flat, but we got our heads into it," said Craig Pinto, Revolution kicker.
The miscues early in the game were soon forgotten, as the Revolution put up a 42-6 lead at halftime.
The Cardinals never found an answer to prevent the Revolution from scoring on nearly every possession of the game.
Revolution quarterback Jay Hawes threw four touchdown passes in the first half.
He connected his touchdown passes to five different players on offense----Martin, running back Elliott White, wide receiver Chris Manno, and offensive linemen Chris Drayton and Ray Simmons.
The eight-year veteran also finished the game with nine-of-14 completions and a team record 10 touchdown passes.
"We came out and played hard, as expected," Manno said.
The Cardinals did some last-minute scoring in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late for the first-year franchise, which was playing its first ever Continental Indoor Football League game.
Cardinal head coach Alonzo Jones said his team did not know the CIFL rules, thinking they were the same as the Arena Football League.
"There are a lot of things that can help us as far as defense and learning the game," Jones said.
For the Revolution's 1,100 fans in attendance, it was like watching the team's first two home games, when they blew out the East Penn Sting 77-18 and the New York State Broncos 62-0.
For fans like Elvis Kraljev, a Brooklyn native who brought her daughter to Saturday's game, it was "a wonderful time and an economic value for the family."
Revolution head coach Al Forysthe hopes his team will keep playing hard, regardless of the opponent.
"It doesn't matter what the other team's record is," Forysthe said. "It only matters who's undefeated on that day."
The Revs are are scheduled to play their first road game this weekend, but the opponent has not yet been announced.
