Can the Houma Conquerors conquer football fans in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes?
That is the question many sports fans are pondering this weekend as the Conquerors prepare for their inaugural season as a charter member of the Southern Indoor Football League.
The Conquerors kick off their season at 3 p.m. Sunday in Houston against the Texas Pirates.
Sunday’s game will open a new chapter in Houma’s professional sports history.
Hopefully, the Conquerors have more success than Houma’s last two ventures in professional sports.
The Bayou Bucks, a National Indoor Football League team, called Houma home from 2002-04. That venture into arena football ended in turmoil when team owner Neil Suard filed a lawsuit against Terrebonne Parish government alleging parish officials intentionally misled his company, Sudo Properties, into investing heavily in a team that they knew to be a losing venture.
In 2003, the Houma Hawks tried to make a splash into the Southeastern League of Professional Baseball, but that never materialized. Problems with securing a suitable ballpark plagued the team, and it folded after only a season.
With two recent professional sports disasters, it’s easy to see why some area sports fans are skeptical. However, there are some people that are excited about the Conquerors. They have bought season tickets and plan to wear the team’s colors to the home opener against the Austin Turfcats at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center on April 26.
But there are others who are taking a wait-and-see approach.
Considering the tough economic times we are in, some people may want to see if the Conquerors and SIFL are legit before they decide to attend a game. That was not a problem the Bayou Bucks faced when they played in Houma. The economy was in better shape and people had more disposable income.
Unfortunately for the Conquerors, the economy is forcing them to play at a slight disadvantage.
If the Conquerors want to succeed, they need to make a good first impression. To do that, they have to do one thing — win.
That is why the first two weeks of the season are so important.
Winning their first two games would do more than give the Conquerors a 2-0 record. It will generate much-needed excitement around the community.......article continues in link.
