www.madison.com/wsj/home/sports/wiaa//446508With college football teams around the country immersed in the rigors of spring camp, a couple of former University of Wisconsin players have taken their game to a new gridiron – complete with Astroturf and dashers.
“It feels a little like spring ball,” former UW linebacker James Kamoku said of playing for the Continental Indoor Football League’s Wisconsin Wolfpack.
Kamoku is joined by former UW defensive end Kurt Ware to provide a hometown presence in this, the Wolfpack’s inaugural season.
Almost everything about football in the CIFL is a little bit unusual. The game and its teams are stripped down to bare essentials: seven players per side on a 50-yard indoor field, with padded dashers in place of sidelines. Further, linebackers are not hindered by having to announce blitz eligibility, creating an all-out defensive free-for-all.
Subtracting four bodies from each side of the on-field equation has provided the biggest learning curve for most players.
“I’m getting used to it,” said Kamoku, whose team plays the Fort Wayne Freedom Friday night at 7 at the Dane County Coliseum. “You take out four players, (and) it’s harder. It’s more one-on-one, player against player. Going one-on-one is really the essence of 7-on-7.”......article continues in link.
