Chance.
Look it up in a dictionary, and you'll find many different meanings of this word, such as "the happening of events without apparent cause; fortuity; luck," or "an unpredictable event or accidental happening; a risk or gamble."
It has also been one of the most used words by players participating in the Houma Conquerors training camp this week.
While attending the Conquerors' first-ever training camp practice last Saturday, I talked to several players who are fighting for a spot on the team's 27-man roster. Each of those players mentioned the word chance during the interviews. Here are a few quotes.
"All I want is a chance to help out the team any way I can," said halfback Kevin Johnson of Thibodaux.
"I'm just looking for a chance to show what I can do and make it to the next level," said halfback Brandon Butler of Houma.
"This is just giving me a second chance to play football since I didn't play my senior year of high school. I want to make my whole family proud and just represent Houma," said defensive line Michael Smith of Gray.
"It's a chance to give back to the great fans of Houma and bring a championship here," said kicker and former Nicholls State and Bayou Bucks player Chris Stropolo.
"This is a chance for my 8-year-old nephew to watch me play. He knows his Uncle Charles played in high school and in college, but he never got a chance to see Uncle Charles play. Now he will," said defensive lineman/linebacker Charles Phillips of Gray.
