BAYOU BLACK — The wet field conditions from the recent rainy weather forced the Houma Conquerors to move the first day of training camp inside to the tiny confines of the Bayou Black Gym on Saturday.
But it didn’t dampen the team’s spirits as the 40 players signed to participate in the Conquerors’ inaugural training camp went through two-a-day workouts for the first time with the newly established Southern Indoor Football League team.
In the morning session, the team traveled to the Renaissance Health and Racquet Club in Houma and participated in weight lifting and exercise workouts. The afternoon session shifted to the Bayou Black Gym where the players broke up by position and participated in individual drills with their position coaches.
Also during the afternoon workouts, the quarterbacks, running backs and receivers got the chance to learn plays and run passing routes under the leadership of offensive coordinator Doug Coleman and receivers coach/consultant C.J. Maiden. The defensive backs, which is one of the highly contested position battles on the team, did work focusing on coverage schemes, while the offensive and defensive linemen participated in agility drills and techniques.
Despite the lack of space in the gym, Conquerors owner and coach Franklin Thomas was pleased with how the players adjusted and made the most of the situation.
“We are an indoor football team, but we would have liked to get some work outside with more space,” Thomas said. “Even though we didn’t get to work outside, we had a pretty good workout and had the chance to get a lot of work done.”
