I know that might be a strange thing to ask in March, but the football season will actually begin this weekend for Houma’s newest professional sports franchise — the Conquerors.
The Conquerors, a charter team of the newly established Southern Indoor Football League, will officially kick off their inaugural season with the start of training camp on Saturday at the Bayou Black Recreation Center.
The training camp will last until April 11. The Conquerors will play their first regular-season game on the road against the Texas Pirates on April 19.
During the 15-day training camp, the Conquerors’ practices on weekends (Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5 and April 11) will be held at the Bayou Black Recreation Center, and the weekday practices (Tuesday-April 2 and April 7-9) will shift to the East Houma Recreation Center.
Right off the bat, the Conquerors will quickly get to work with two-a-day practices scheduled for Saturday and Sunday as the 40 players invited to the camp will battle it out to earn a spot on the team’s 27-man regular season roster, which will feature 23 players on the active game roster and four on the practice squad.
The two-a-day practices will be held on the weekend dates from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. During the weekdays, the team will only have one practice a day, lasting from 7-9:30 p.m.
So as you can see, the Conquerors, led by team owner and coach Franklin Thomas, will be very busy in the upcoming days as they prepare for the start of the rapidly approaching 2009 season.
As the team’s “overseer,” Thomas has been working hard on both the business and football side of things since announcing the Conquerors’ debut in November.
But as he told me during an interview on Wednesday, it’s now time to focus mainly on football......article continues in link.
