HOUMA -- The Houma Conquerors lease agreement with the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center was approved by the Terrebonne Parish Council during its committee meetings on Monday.
The Parish Council agreed, by an 8-0 vote, to approve the one-year lease agreement, which will allow the Conquerors to play their six-game home schedule in the Civic Center. The lease was subject to the council’s approval since it oversees the Civic Center.
Conquerors owner and coach Franklin Thomas said he is thrilled that the lease was approved. He said it lets the team to move forward and focus on preparing for its inaugural season, which begins on the road against the Texas Pirates on April 19. Houma will play its first home game against the Austin Turfcats on April 26.
“Getting the lease approved is a big burden off of our backs,” Thomas said. “It shows that the city of Houma wants a team here. We’re going to do all we can to make sure everything goes the way it’s supposed to go, and we’re going to bring a winning team to Houma, not only on the field, but off the field as well.”
The lease, which was signed by the Conquerors’ owners, Conquest Sports, and Civic Center officials on Jan. 23, calls for the new Southern Indoor Football League franchise to pay an adjusted rental rate of $4,200 per event for the main halls and locker rooms and $300 per event for the smaller meeting rooms.
Councilman Alvin Tillman abstained from the vote on Monday.
“To me, it just don’t make sense,” Tillman said. “I don’t see how they’re going to make money.”....article continues in link.
