www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x376554119/No-HeadlineHURRICANE -- Training camp for the West Virginia Wild begins today here at Teays Physical Therapy Center Performance Plus.
Wild coach Michael Owens has to work fast as the Wild's first game is scheduled Feb. 27 against the Marion Mayhem at Veterans Memorial Field House.
Owens, who played three seasons for the Huntington Heroes in the American Indoor Football Association, had several veterans lined up through personal contacts. He also secure players from tryouts the last two Saturdays at Teays Valley Physical Therapy Center.
"I can't wait to see how we mesh and I know for a fact that a few our our players can't wait to get out there and hit someone else," the former Marshall player said.
Many of the CIFL teams already are established while Owens is working nearly from scratch.
"I know some of these guys, they're professionals and they know what it takes to play this game," Owens said. "It moves at a fast pace and what we need to do is concentrate on executing and getting our timing down. But that's what camp's for."
This is Huntington's third indoor pro team. The River Cities LocoMotives played in the National Indoor Football League in 2001, but lasted one season. The Heroes made it through three seasons before calling it quits after 2008.
Unlike the last two leagues, the CIFL features seven players on the field instead of eight.
