Harrisburg Stampede Signs Quarterback Syvelle Newton
HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (December 30, 2008) – The Harrisburg Stampede of the American Indoor Football Association announced the signing of quarterback Syvelle Newton today for the 2009 season. He will be on the team roster for the upcoming AIFA All-Star Game in Harrisburg on January 24th.
Newton was one of the most versatile athletes every to play football at South Carolina. In addition to his quarterback duties, he also played running back and wide receiver. He is one of four players in college football history with more than 600 yards passing, rushing and receiving during his collegiate career.
Newton signed a two-year contract to play with Montreal of the Canadian Football League, but decided to leave the team when they wanted to move him from quarterback to wide receiver. He also played with the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League, where his brother Cam was a defensive back.
“It is very difficult to find a quarterback and athlete of this caliber,” said Stampede owner and AIFA co-founder John Morris. “That's why we're so pleased to have Syvelle on board. We believe he will have a significant impact on this team.”
“I'm going make it the best that I can,” Newton told This Week in the AIFA. “Hopefully I can come in this year and do as much as I can for the team. It (indoor football) will be an adjustment. If you're going to be a professional athlete, you need to know how to adjust. It's a great opportunity.”
The entire interview with Syvelle Newton will air on the next edition of This Week in the AIFA. The program is available through both the AIFA (www.aifaprofootball.com) and OurSports Central (www.oursportscentral.com) web sites.
