Rattlesnakes Host Tryouts, Sports Anchor Joins Group

It was a chilly morning yesterday but over 40 Laredoans including myself made their way to open tryouts, all hoping to be the first Rattlesnake sensation. Before getting started head coach Rod Miller filled us in on we would be doing exactly.
"Basic combine drills, your 40, your short shuttle, your L-drill, your individual position drills and your broad jump. and see who can play football."
I had decided to take my shot at making the team and Miller gave us some insight into what it takes to be one of the chosen few.
"Can't coach speed so we are looking for speed, some nice size and guys that are athletic and can go out and do more than one thing. a guy that can play more than one position on offense and defense, that's what we're looking for."
Now was my chance to see how I stacked up with some of the cities best athletes. While my hopes were high, my expectations were low.
One man who has alreay been through the process was hoping the second time around would be just as good as the first. Sean Clements attended a similar tryout for the Lobos and was able to make the team.
"One day coach asked me what i really wanted to do, he gave me some offers of staying on the team and playing or going back to school and i chose going back to college to play for a couple years."
While his college days are over, Clements has not stopped working out, something he thinks will give him a leg up on most of the other participants.
"I train everyday, I do alot of functional training, a lot of core conditioning. it's part of my life."
He knows this may be the last chance he gets with father time creeping up on him, but his expectations remain high.
"Hopefully be one of the top two, that's what i'm striving for. It's make or break."
As for my tryout, it is winding down, with the reality I fear looming in the end.
"Unfortuantely we won't be able to use you this year but keep working on it and maybe next season."
As I make the long walk of shame through the parking lot, my dreams of playing professional football dashed, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.
Much thanks to Coach Miller and the Rattlesnakes for having me out. While I didn't make the cut four others did, congratulations to each of these men on getting one step closer to realizing their dreams.
