UPDATE: A former University of Iowa wide receiver was arrested early Wednesday morning on suspicion of drunken driving after he told police that they “wouldn’t last a (expletive) minute in Kinnick Stadium.”
Paul Allen Chaney, 24, of Iowa City, was stopped for running a red light at 1:39 a.m. near the intersection of Clinton and Burlington streets, according to a criminal complaint. Chaney told the UI police officer who stopped him that he had consumed a few drinks but was “not that drunk,” according to the report.
He smelled of alcohol, was wearing bar wrist bands, and had bloodshot eyes, blurred speech and unsteady balance, according to police.
Chaney’s blood alcohol content tested at .183, police reported, and he was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated, his first OWI offense.
In 2006, Chaney was a red-shirt wide receiver for the Hawkeyes. He ranked 10th in the Big Ten in kickoff returns in 2007, and caught 19 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown that year, according to UI records.
Chaney also ran track for the school in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011.
As of Wednesday morning, Chaney was listed as a wide receiver on the website for the Cedar Rapids Titans indoor football squad, which starts its season next week. But Chris Kokalis, general manager and co-owner of the Titans, said Chaney was actually released from the team for “football-related reasons” following Sunday’s practice.
“And, if he were a part of the team, we have a strict one-strike policy,” Kokalis said. “Players are released immediately.”
Chaney was no longer being held at the Johnson County Jail at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
