Rome’s new indoor football team the Rampage recently took a tragic hit.
Head coach Joe Micco was involved in a motorcycle crash early Saturday morning near Savannah, and is in a coma in ICU at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.
According to Rampage general manager Kacee Smith, an eye witness at the scene saw the coach thrown from his motorcycle after hitting an island in the road, and his helmet came off before the impact. Micco suffered from multiple skull fractures.
Smith visited his coach, and friend, at the hospital.
“It effects me on a business level and a personal level,” Smith said. “Joe is just one of those guys you’re fortunate to have.”
Smith added the event has had a personal affect on him as well.
“Over the past few months, me and him have become very close,” Smith said. “He’s become a very close friend of mine. I’m still in shock. It’ll probably really hit me when I get there. It’s definitely a situation that I’ve never been in before.”
Smith said Micco wasn’t vocal, but he has shown signs of awareness since the accident.
“It was really encouraging,” Smith said. “As I was talking to him, I was getting him caught up on Rampage stuff, he started moving his left eye.”
Smith said more tests will be run on Micco on Tuesday to determine brain swelling and activity.
Micco’s wife Alyson, who is a general dentist for the U.S. Army, was flown in from Afghanistan to be with her husband.
The Rampage are scheduled to play their first season when the Ultimate Indoor Football League kicks off its 2012 season in February.
The coaching staff, so far, includes defensive and offensive line coach Lou Vega.
The team will play their games at The Forum.
