TRENTON. NJ - Tyrell Zimmerman, the agile 6-foot-1, 285-pound defensive tackle who served as a bulwark for the Steel defensive line, is the latest Trenton player to advance to the Arena Football League.
Zimmerman, a major defensive force in the Steel's 8-4 Southern Indoor Football League season that ended in the playoffs, signed with the AFL's Tulsa Talons. He will be in the lineup when the Talons host the Orlando Predators Saturday night.
"Tyrell certainly has the athleticism and agility to help an AFL team on the defense line,'' said Steel head coach Rod Miller.
He follows Steel teammates - linemen Nate Tucker (Cleveland and Melik Brown (Philadelphia) and quarterback E.J. Nemeth (Utah) - into the AFL. Zimmerman previously had a private workout with the Talons and head coach Mitch Allner last November.
The Talons (7-9) recently lost several players due to injury and the United Football League and, being familiar with Zimmerman, figure he will fit their present needs. Still in playoff contention in the AFL National Central, Tulsa closes its campaign at Kansas City July 23.
"It's a great opportunity,'' said Zimmerman. "I just want to make the best of it.''
