Quarterback E.J. Nemeth, a former Notre Dame High star who led the high-powered Trenton Steel offense to an 8-4 mark and playoff berth in the Southern Indoor Football League, signed with the Arena Football League's Utah Blaze Thursday.
The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder, who played his collegiate football at Sacred Heart, was named to the SIFL All-Star Second Team earlier. He is the third Steel performer to find a spot with an AFL club, as linemen Nate Tucker (Cleveland) and Melik Brown (Philadelphia) were signed Wednesday.
Nemeth had a superb season for the Steel, completing 246-of-422 passes for 3,169 yards and 70 touchdowns. He also rushed 81 times for 160 yards and 27 touchdowns, and was highly effective in goal-line situations.
"I really feel E.J. can really help an AFL team in those goal-line offensive situations,'' said Steel head coach Rod Miller. "With his size, he's excellent in that area.''
The Blaze, 7-8 and in second place in the AFL's National Conference West, still has a shot at a playoff spot. The ream has three games left, at Spokane Saturday, at home with New Orleans July 16 and at Cleveland July 22.
