www.mysouthwestga.com/sports/story.aspx?id=636608ALBANY, GA -- The Albany Panthers quest for the 2011 Southern Indoor Football League title actually started with a loss to the Louisiana Swashbucklers in the first round of last season's playoffs.
Now after four months of work, the Panthers achieved their championship. This time, not even those Swashbucklers could stand in Albany's way.
The Panthers played angry in the second half defeating the Swashbucklers 69-48 for the SIFL Championship.
Albany used its signature stingy defense and a second half comeback to keep the President’s Cup at the Albany Civic Center, or in the champagne-soaked hands of Panthers general manager Will Carter.
The Panthers believed they were down 27-24 at the break only to be informed that three points were being pulled off the scoreboard. Panthers kicker Geoff Boyer using his dropkick-style method knocked three extra points through the uprights that were believed to be worth two points for each kick.
However, the SIFL rulebook stated otherwise, and Albany went into the locker room at the half actually down six, 27-21.
But in true 2011 Panthers form, the team handled adversity like a champ.
The Panthers outscored Louisiana 48-21 in the final half of the 2011 season making the three point subtraction null.
The Panthers, in only their second year as a franchise, finish the season at 13-2.
