Bethlehem, PA: The 2011 IFL regular season has come to a close. And so has the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks inaugural season. Finishing at 4-10 on the year, the Steelhawks first season was more successful than their record indicates. Through their efforts on and off the field, the Steelhawks organization has been able to engrain themselves in the Lehigh Valley community.
Not only did they provide fans with fun, fast-paced entertainment, they also got involved in the community and created some great partnerships along the way.
The Steelhawks partnered with Starters Restaurants to benefit the Race for Adam Foundation during the month of May. Players and coaches spent the day with the participants of the 6th Annual Run/Walk for a Cure of Childhood Alzheimer's.
Also in May, the team worked with the American Cancer Society to create a special Mother's Day game that featured alternative black and purple jerseys. These jerseys were auctioned off after the game with all proceeds benefiting ACS.
March of Dimes collaborated with the Steelhawks as well. Partial proceeds from the an April 9th game against Bloomington went to this cause and volunteers helped to sign people up for the annual March of Dimes walk.
Other charities that the Steelhawks partnered with were the Child's Advocacy Center of Lehigh County Read-On Program and the Children's Home of Easton; each of these organizations receiving donated tickets so that the kids could come out to the games.
Some players visited local schools for career days, sharing their professional experiences with the kids. And then visits to Rascals Food & Fun every Friday night for some fun and games gave kids the opportunity to challenge the Steelhawk players to a variety of games.
Our fans were key to the Steelhawks success this season. They were there to support the Steelhawks throughout the entire season. The local fan base called Noise Nation became loyal Steelhawk fans that brought the noise each and every home game. We hope to see all the fans back for 2012, as well as many new ones!
The Steelhawks season started with a midnight madness training camp that Coach Rich Britt created. This was a unique experience that immediately created a team unity as the players began their season together. The team faced a tough schedule for the season, facing five of the twelve teams that would eventually qualify for the playoffs.
A tough schedule wasn't the only thing the Steelhawks had to contend with, as throughout the season the team faced many injuries, including the placement of eight guys on season ending IR. But the guys continued to fight and put forth great effort to end the season strong. In the last half of the season, the Steelhawks went 3-4, including a three game win streak.
Season highlights included snapping the Fairbanks Grizzlies, the eventual number two team in the Intense Conference, winning streak at eight games. Defensive back Theo Hall was the league's leading kick returner, Running back Isaiah Grier was the fifth leading rusher, and Linebacker Adrian McLeod was in the top 10 of the league for tackles made. Defensive lineman Chris Medina was named Week Three VidSwap.com Special Teams Player of the week by the IFL. Later in the season, Linebacker Adrian McLeod was named Week Fifteen VidSwap.com Defensive Player of the Week by the IFL. The year also culminated with the Steelhawks winning the IFL's Best Media Relations Award for their work with the press, and getting out team information.
The entire Steelhawks organization is excited for the 2012 season. The staff is already reviewing this year's season in order to prepare for next February. We are working hard to make sure that next year will be even better!
