If the Louisiana Swashbucklers are to return to the Southern Indoor Football League championship game, they’re going to have to do something no one in the SIFL has been able to do all season: beat the Houston Stallions.
The Swashbucklers travel to the undefeated Stallions today for the Western Conference championship of the SIFL playoffs. The game will be played at 7 p.m. at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
The Stallions trampled the rest of the league with a 12-0 record, including two wins over the Swashbucklers (9-4).
The games were close, though, with Houston winning 64-57 in Katy on May 15 and 40-38 in Lake Charles on June 11.
The Swashbucklers have a bit of history on their side, too. One of their four losses this year was 62-51 to the Corpus Christi Hammerheads on June 5. But Louisiana beat the Hammerheads 59-20 in the first round of the playoffs to reach tonight’s game.
Plus, the Swashbucklers are the only team in the three-year-old SIFL to have won a road playoff game, beating the Albany (Georgia) Panthers in the first round of last year’s playoffs.
Louisiana (9-4) has been to both SIFL championship games. Last year, the Columbus Lions beat the Bucs 68-13 in the finale, ending a three-year run of indoor football championships for Louisiana, which previously competed in the Intense Football League.
The Stallions survived a close call in the first round of the playoffs, beating the Rio Grande Valley Magic 65-62 on Jon Thompson’s 46-yard field goal with no time left on the clock.
Albany awaits the winner of tonight’s game. The Panthers beat the defending champion Lions 75-61 Saturday in the Eastern Conference championship to advance to Saturday’s league title game.
Houston, the top seed in the playoffs, would host Albany, while Lake Charles would have to travel to Albany.
Bucs quarterback Ben McLaughlin threw for five touchdowns against Corpus Christi, while the Louisiana defense snagged seven interceptions.
McLaughlin’s performance brought his season numbers to 2,265 yards and 50 touchdowns. He’s completed 204 of 319 attempts with 12 interceptions.
Stallions quarterback Robert Kent has thrown for 2,215 yards and 52 touchdowns, completing 168 of 252 attempts with seven interceptions
