LAKE CHARLES, La. - Storylines to watch in this week's playoff action in the Southern Indoor Football League. Albany travels to Columbus Saturday while Houston hosts Louisiana on Monday.
THE FOOT IS MIGHTIER THAN THE LINEMAN: Kickers played a major role in three of the four first-round games last weekend. Of course, Jon Thompson's field on the final play for Houston that gave the Stallions a 65-62 instant classic decision over RGV will stand as one the most memorable plays of the season, but the UNO kicking of Trey Crum in Columbus and Geoff Boyer in Albany played key roles in the Lions and the Panthers downing Trenton and Erie.
HARDER AT THE TOP: You're supposed to have an easier first round when you earn a top seed. Not in the SIFL. Both Columbus and Houston escaped with two point victories while Albany and LA had convincing wins that were decided way before the clock reached zero.
RESILIENT STALLIONS: Houston's NFL team plays in Reliant Stadium, but the Stallions have made their mark as a resilient team during this undefeated season. The Stallions have won three games by three points or less and another by seven.
JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: The only team to win a road game in the SIFL playoff history' LA, who stunned Albany last season in the opening round. The home team has won the other 9 post-season activities.
EXPERIENCE: The Columbus franchise has been in the post-season every year since opening shop in the WIFL back in 2007. LA won two Intense league titles and the inaugural SIFL championship in 2009.
BEST RIVALRY IN THE GAME' We think Albany-Columbus is up there with Red Sox-Yankees, Florida-Florida State and BYU-Utah, but that's just us. The two cities are just 90 minutes apart and have the best fan bases in not just the SIFL, but all of indoor football. Columbus leads the series this year 2-1.
NOTES: Albany WR Antwone has scored in 8 straight games ... Columbus QB Chris McCoy had a three-game streak without throwing an INT snapped last week against Trenton, still one in four games ain't bad ... Columbus' turnover ratio in regular season: +21 ... Six different LA defenders combined to register the team's seven picks against Corpus Christi last week ... Another reason Houston is undefeated: Only 11 turnovers while having league's most efficient pass offense.
