KATY, Tex. - Jon Thompson's 46-yard field goal with no time remaining lifted the Houston Stallions to a 65-62 instant classic win over the Rio Grande Valley Magic to conclude the opening round of the Southern Indoor Football League playoffs Monday night.
The Magic (6-7) at one point led 35-12 late in the first half, but the Stallions rallied to improve to 13-0 on the season.
RGV had a chance to win it in the final seconds, but Leo Araguz's 21-yard field goal hooked left, leaving 1.4 seconds on the clock for Thompson's kick.
The Magic held a 55-39 lead with 10:20 remaining in the fourth quarter thanks to a touchdown run by John Taylor. After that, Houston tied the game at 55 before the Magic reclaimed a 62-55 lead. That lead was short-lived, because Houston's Timon Marshall returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards for a TD to tie the game at 62.
LIONS 62 STEEL 60
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Chris McCoy threw six touchdown passes and Trey Crum's five UNO's played a key role in the defending SIFL champion Lions holding off the Steel.
After the teams exchanged touchdowns on four consecutive possessions, Columbus finally pulled away to a 62-46 lead on McCoy's 30-yarder to Gerald Gales with 5:45 left, followed by a Crum UNO that put Trenton in a two-score, and two-point conversion situation.
E.J. Nemeth's 1-yard run and two-pointer closed it to a 62-54 game with 58 seconds to go. Columbus recovered the onside kick, but couldn't run the clock out and Trenton capitalized as Nemeth hit Oderick Turner for 30 yards to make it 62-60 with 30 seconds remaining.
Columbus' defense denied the two-point conversion and recovered the onside kick.
McCoy was 25 of 38 for 247 yards. Gales (9-115) and Anthony Merritt (8-72) each caught two scores.
Nemeth finished 31 of 49 for 391 yards, with Turner catching 12 passes for 185 yards and five scores while Dan Huff posted 14 catches for 134 yards.
PANTHERS 68 EXPLOSION 43
ALBANY, Ga. - Cecil Lester threw seven touchdown passes and Levan Richmond registered four of the Panthers' six interceptions of Adam DiMichele as Albany downed Erie to advance to advance to the East championship game.
Lester (23 of 31 for 210 yards) connected with Antwone Savage on four touchdowns and Antwonti Curtis three times as the Panthers took a quick 9-0 and then pulled away from a 16-12 game with24 second-quarter points.
Albany's defense contained DiMichele (24 of 41 for 294 yards) to six touchdown passes. Kevin Concepcion caught three, but was limited to six catches for the game. Tirone Morris led the Explosion with 10 receptions for 149 yards.
Two Cutts touchdown catches and Geoff Boyer's third UNO pushed Albany's lead to 55-24 midway through the third quarter. Erie scored three unanswered touchdowns and closed to 55-43 with 9:56 remaining but could pull no closer.
SWASHBUCKLERS 59, HAMMERHEADS 20
LAKE CHARLES, La. - -Ben McLaughlin threw three of his five touchdown passes to Marcus Wilridge and the Bucs defense registered seven interceptions as Louisiana downed Corpus Christi.
The Hammerheads closed to 20-14 on Justin Hardman's two-yard run with 13:15 remaining in the half, but LA scored 25 unanswered points over the next 19 minutes.
Six different LA defenders had a pick. Wilridge finished with 8 catches for 98 yards.
Scott Palmer had five catches for 51 yards for the Hammerheads.
