The Magic (6-7) at one point led 35-12 late in the first half but couldn’t hold off the Stallions, who improved to 13-0 on the season. Despite squandering the lead, the Magic had a chance to win with under five seconds left, but Leo Araguz’s 21-yard field goal hooked left, leaving enough time on the clock for Thompson’s kick.
The Stallions beat the Magic four times this season and will face Louisiana for the Western Conference championship.
The Magic held a 55-39 lead with 10:20 remaining in the fourth quarter thanks to a touchdown run by John Taylor. After that, Houston tied the game at 55 before the Magic reclaimed a 62-55 lead. That lead was short-lived, because Houston’s Timon Marshall returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards for a TD to tie the game at 62.
