Richmond, VA: Saturday, June 18th kicked off the post-season for the Indoor Football League. 12 of the League's premier teams began their journey to be the final team standing at the United Bowl.
The Indoor Football League started the playoffs with the United Conference Saturday evening. The first post-season match up was between the 6th seed Chicago Slaughter and 3rd seed Reading Express. Both teams started out strong with only a field goal giving the Express the lead at the close of the first quarter. Again in the second quarter, both the Slaughter and Express showed up; however, the Express found momentum through their special teams when Mike Dell returned a field goal attempt and Erik Rockhold only missed one extra point. Coming out of halftime, the momentum remained with the Express. The Express defense was able to steamroll over the Slaughter offense with 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery, and 9 sacks; the Slaughter offense was not able to regain any momentum and could only muster 6 points in the third quarter while remaining scoreless in the final quarter of their 2011 season. On the other hand, the Express defense allowed the offense to monopolize field time and score 5 more touchdowns before the end of the fourth quarter. The Reading Express defeated the Chicago Slaughter in the first round of playoffs to get one step closer to the United Bowl, 76-33.
The second game for Saturday evening was between the Omaha Beef and Bloomington Extreme, the 4 and 5 seed of the United Conference respectively. In the first half of the game, the Extreme and Beef were trading off on scoring throughout the quarters; however, the Beef was able to come out on top each time, outscoring the Extreme 27-13 in the first half. Going into the third quarter, the Extreme realized there was still an opportunity to defeat the Beef, which they took full advantage of. The only time the Beef was able to get on the board was due to a pick-6 with less than 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter. In the final quarter of Round 1 playoffs for the United Conference, the Extreme defense and special teams put forth strong efforts only allowing 1 touchdown for the Beef and then blocking the extra point attempt. Though the Extreme defense fought hard, the offense was not able to overcome the Beef defense, which only allowed for 1 Extreme touchdown. The Bloomington Extreme battled hard to overcome the first half deficit; however, the Omaha Beef was able to maintain dominance and the win, 39-34.
Sunday evening began the playoffs for the Intense Conference as the 6th seed, Wyoming Cavalry, battled against the 3rd seed, Allen Wranglers. The Cavalry started off strong in the first quarter, not allowing the Wranglers to reach the end zone, while posting up 10 points of their own. However, in the second quarter, there was a shift in momentum. The Wranglers dominated the second quarter, only allowing a Cavalry field goal, while the Wranglers scored 20 additional points. Both defenses played strong by causing major complications for the respective quarterback; the Cavalry had 4 interceptions while the Wranglers were able to get 5 interceptions. In the second half of the game, the two teams were evenly matched, both only scoring 7 points in the third quarter and zero points in the final quarter. The strong surge of productivity of the Allen Wranglers in the second quarter helped the Wranglers become the first Round 1 victors for the Intense Conference, 27-20.
