The Albany Panthers scored the game's first nine points and never trailed in defeating the Explosion 68-43.
Erie coach Shawn Liotta said Erie's slow start created an obstacle for the Explosion.
"We got ourselves into a hole early, and you can't do that against a good team on the road," Liotta said.
Explosion QB Adam DiMichele (24-of-41, 261 yards) threw six interceptions and six touchdowns in the loss. He had seven interceptions in 12 regular-season games.
With just under 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Explosion cut the Panthers' lead to 55-43. However, Erie was unable to recover an onside kick that went the other way for an Albany (11-2) TD.
The Explosion (9-4), who led the SIFL in points-per-game with 70.2, totaled their third-lowest output of the season.
Liotta said that despite the loss, the season was a success.
"I'm proud of our team," he said. "There are too many positives in the season for the loss tonight to overtake them."
