LAKE CHARLES LA. - The Houston Stallions end the 2011 season as the Southern Indoor Football League's only undefeated team as they play the Louisiana Swashbucklers in a hard fought contest ending with a score of 40-38. The Bucs end the season with a record of 9-4 while Houston goes into the postseason with a 12-0 worksheet.
On the first play from scrimmage Louisiana's defensive back Damien Huren intercepted a pass from Stallions quarterback Robert Kent but the Bucs were unable to capitalize on it. On the first offensive series for Houston wide receiver Roland Hayes punches the ball into the end zone for the score. Houston would return the favor a few minutes later when Darvin Peterson picked off a pass from Bucs quarterback Ben McLaughlin. That would set up later a three yard touchdown run from Carlos Alsup. Though Alsup did not have a spectacular game he made the plays when it counted for the Stallions.
The Swashbucklers would not score until under two minutes left in the first quarter when McLaughlin found wideout Mike Maciejewski who made a mid-air catch in the end zone. In the second Houston wide receiver Damion Clark caught a 16 yard bomb from Kent but the Bucs bounced back a few minutes later when Kent was tackled for a safety in his own end zone. With the score at 9-20 at this time the rest of the first half belonged to Louisiana as wideout Marcus Wildridge caught a four yard catch from McLaughlin and kicker Blake Bercegay booted a 33 yard field goal. The Monster Defense for the Bucs had shut down the Stallions defense as well inclusive of sacking Kent at the one yard line which stopped a potential scoring drive.
The first half was riddled with a few scuffles between the teams resulting in several flags thrown for unsportsmanlike conduct. It also had a wild ending in which Bercegay attempted a 30 yard field goal which was blocked. The ball tumbled into the end zone followed a horde of players from both teams which resulted in more exchanges between players from both teams and a lot of confusion on the field. It was decided by the officials that Louisiana had a safety which ended the half with a 21-20 score. But at the start of the second half the officials reversed their decision and it started with a 19-20 reading on the scoreboard.
The second half started with Louisiana scoring a field goal on their first offensive series after chewing up seven minutes of the clock. Houston responded in turn when wide receiver Timon Marshall caught a 30 yard touchdown bomb from Kent. A two-point conversion was attempted but no good. Shortly thereafter a scoring run by Louisiana's Jordan Rideaux put the team ahead at 29-26 but before the end of the quarter Kent punched his way to paydirt from three yards out and Houston was ahead 29-33 to end it.
Though the fourth quarter remained close the advantage and momentum stayed with Houston. Bercegay had a 24 yard field goal which put the score 32-33 with a one point lead for the Stallions. Later Alsup was able to find his way into the end zone with eight and a half minutes remaining in regulation. With the point after the scoreboard read 32-40 but Louisiana kept playing hard. With less than three minutes remaining on the clock McLaughlin got the ball over the goal line with a quarterback sneak but a two point conversion following was unsuccessful. With an attempted onside kick by the Swashbucklers falling into the hands of a Houston player the game ended with a final of 38-40.
The Swashbucklers will begin postseason action in the SIFL on Saturday, June 18th, when the Bucs will take on the Corpus Christi Hammerheads for the third time this season. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Smuggler's Den in the Lake Charles Civic Center. The SIFL championship game is scheduled for Saturday, July 2nd. The location will be determined at a later time.
