Six records broken, tied as Sting claim Ultimate Bowl
SAGINAW, MI – Tommy Jones threw for a UIFL single-game record 10 touchdowns and Saginaw set a new single-game record with 86 points as the Sting claimed the Ultimate Indoor Football League title with the 86-69 victory over Eastern Kentucky Friday at the Dow Center. (Game Stats)
Saginaw scored on 11 of its 12 possessions, falling short of perfection with a missed field goal in the second quarter. Despite missing one field goal, Sting kicker Chris Kolias tied a UIFL record with a 55-yarder in the fourth quarter.
Jones completed his first 10 passes of the game, and the last of those 10 completions gave the Sting a 28-14 lead. He finished the game 25-of-36 for a single-game superlative of 346 yards as well as the 10 scoring strikes.
The 40-yard bomb to Zac Nichols was the first touchdown not thrown to LaVaughn Macon. The diminutive receiver hauled in the first three Saginaw touchdowns, and finished the game with six scoring receptions. He wasn’t the only player in the game with six touchdown catches as Drillers receiver Matthew Barbour found the promised land six times as well.
The six trips to paydirt tied Macon and Barbour with NKY’s Ricardo Lenhart for the single-game mark.
While the Saginaw offense was running with extreme efficiency, Eastern Kentucky was doing all it could to keep pace. Two empty first-quarter possessions, both missed field goals, had the Drillers in comeback mode for the duration of the contest.
EKY quarterback Allan Holland finished the game 23-of-46 for 280 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception. His favorite target, Barbour, finished with 12 catches for 153 yards to go along with his six scoring receptions. The 12 receptions tied Barbour with four other players for a UIFL single-game high.
Nichols led Saginaw with nine catches for 176 yards, while Andrew Beaver added 52 yards on six receptions.
Saginaw linebacker John Jacobs finished with seven tackles, one interceptions, a forced fumble and a pass break-up. Defensively for Eastern Kentucky, Jason Conner had five tackles and four pass break-ups, while David Jones led the way with seven tackles.
