Amarillo, TX 6/6/11 - The Amarillo Venom won in blowout fashion Saturday night, as they defeated the Bricktown Brawlers 77-0 in their home finale at Coors Light Field.
The Venom dominated in every facet of the game as the defense recorded five safeties and two defensive touchdowns, while the Venom offense scored eight touchdowns, all while holding the Brawlers scoreless. The shutout was the Venom's first since joining the Indoor Football League last season.
"It felt good to go out there a get a win that way in our final home game of the season," said Julian Reese, the Venom's head coach. "We didn't start as crisp as I would have liked, but we got the end results we wanted."
It didn't take the Venom defense long to put points on the board as they recorded their first safety on the Brawlers first possession of the game. The Venom's kick coverage played a large role in the number of safeties recorded by the defense as Bricktown started inside their own five yard line on more than one occasion.
"I thought the defense played really aggressive tonight," said Daniel Snyder, the Venom's defensive coordinator. "I was upset we gave up 32 points last week and our guys responded. The zero on the scoreboard tonight looked a lot better than the 32 on there last week."
Not only did the Venom defense hold the Brawlers scoreless, they held the team from Oklahoma City to a combined 10 yards of total offense. Defensive touchdowns by Barrett Allen on a recovered fumble forced by Kyle Wilson and an interception returned by Edward Cantrell as the first half expired were icing on the cake for the Venom as they carried a 37-0 lead in at the half.
The Venom offense didn't need to score a lot with the success of the defense, but they did anyway. Once again led by Sherard Ellis, the Venom offense scored eight touchdowns. Ellis had a combined four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground. During the third quarter the Venom scored four touchdowns on just seven plays.
"Tonight we were hitting on all cylinders," said Coach Reese. "This was a good way to close out at home and gives us some momentum heading into our game next week."
Up next for the Venom is the West Texas Roughnecks as they close out the season on the road. The game is scheduled for Saturday, June 11th, at 7:11 p.m. and can be listened to on 107.1 FM the Armadillo.
