The defending CIFL champion Cincinnati Commandos scored early and often to open the playoffs with a convincing 71-13 victory over the Chicago Knights. The victory moves the Commandos into the championship game against the winner of Dayton-Marion on June 11 at the Cincinnati Gardens.
Cincinnati opened the scoring two minutes into the game when quarterback Tyler Sheehan hit Derrick Moss on a 14 yard pass. Cincinnati was up 7-0. Five minutes later, Sheehan hit Kyenes Mincy on a nine-yard pass and the Commandos led 13-0. Six minutes later, Cincinnati’s Moss ran from a yard out. After one stanza, the Commandos led 20-0 and cruised on auto pilot the rest of the game.
The Knights opened the second quarter when quarterback Brandon Jewett hit Willie Tolon with a nine-yard pass. The kick was good and it was 20-7. Cincinnati quickly struck back when Sheehan connected with Mincy on a 23 yard pass. The Commandos led 27-7. Chicago struck back when Jewett hit Shawn McKeown on a 39 yard pass. The PAT was no good and it was 27-13. Cincinnati would add three more touchdowns to close the half. The Commandos scored when Connor ran a blocked PAT back for a touchdown; Sheehan then hit Phillip Barnett on a 27 yard touchdown strike and was completed Sheehan hit McGarity on an 11 yard touchdown. The first half concluded when Sheehan hit Moss on a 14 yard pass. The halftime score was 48-13.
Cincinnati scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter when Sheehan hit Mincy on a two yard pass. Cincinnati added two more fourth quarter scores to end the game 71-13.
Chicago’s offense was led by Jewett, who completed 12 of 28 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns and three interceptions. McKeown was the top receiver with five catches for 99 yards. The top defender was Robinson who had three unassisted tackles and three assisted tackles.
Cincinnati’s offense was led by quarterback Sheehan, who completed 17 of 27 passes for 194 yards and nine touchdowns. The top receiver was Barnett with six receptions for 89 yards and two touchdowns. The top rusher was Moss who 36 yards on eight carries and one touchdown. The top defender was Wendell Brown, who had three unassisted tackles, three assisted tackles and one punt blocked.
Chicago’s season ends at 4-7. Cincinnati will move forward to the CIFL Championship Game, the league’s sixth.
