The CIFL regular season championship was on the line when in state rival Marion traveled to Cincinnati to face the defending league champions. Cincinnati jumped out to early lead, Marion fought back to make it close, but the Commandos claim the regular season title by scoring 27 fourth quarter points to win 50-20.
The victory completes an undefeated 10-0 regular season for Cincinnati. The win also means the Commandos have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The loss drops Marion to 8-2 overall and two games behind Cincinnati. Incidentally, both of the Blue Racers losses were to Cincinnati.
Cincinnati drew first blood when Tyler Sheehan completed a 16 yard pass to Kyenes Mincy. The PAT failed and Cincinnati was up 6-0. Sheehan later connected with Barnett for a seven yard pass and the first quarter ended with Cincinnati up 13-0.
Cincinnati opened the second quarter when Brandon Yingling hit a 28 yard field goal to lead 16-0. The Blue Racers finally scored with 53 seconds left in the first half when Joshua Harris scored from a yard out. Cincinnati answered when Derrick Moss ran in from four yards out. The halftime score was 23-7.
Marion put the lone score up in the third quarter when Harris ran in from five yards out. The score was 23-13 after three stanza. The final period belonged to the host Commandos. Sheehan started the quarter by running in from three yards out. Marion answered when Harris threw a 14 yard pass to Marc Huddleston. Cincinnati put the game away with three touchdowns in the final eight minutes. It started when Sheehan hit Moss with a 23 yard strike; followed by Byrd recovering a 15 yard fumble and going for paydirt; and scoring concluded when Sheehan hit Barnet on a 23 yard pass.
For Marion, Harris completed 10 of 18 passes for 64 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Harris was the top rusher with 37 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns. The top receiver was Huddleston with three catches for 25 yards and 1 touchdown. The top defensive player was Bryceson Lawrence, who had seven unassisted tackles and one assisted tackle.
Cincinnati was led on offense by Sheehan who completed 14 of 27 passes for 157 yards and four touchdowns and one interception. The top receiver was George Murray who caught seven passes for 61 yards. The top rusher was Moss, who had 38 yards on eight carriers and one touchdown. The top defensive player was Pernell Phillips who had seven unassisted tackles, five assisted tackles and two unassisted sacks.
On June 3rd, Cincinnati begins defense of their championship at home against Chicago. Marion is home to host Dayton June 6th.
