Amarillo, TX 5/30/11 - The Amarillo Venom continued to roll Saturday night as they defeated the Arizona Adrenaline 79-32 at the Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, Arizona. The win against the Adrenaline was the Venom's third consecutive win and kept the team a perfect 3-0 under Interim Head Coach Julian Reese.
The Venom's offense would continue to be efficient under starting Quarterback Sherard Ellis as they would score on 12 of their 14 offensive possessions, eleven touchdowns and one field goal. The only two possessions the Venom did not come away with points was when the first and second halves came to a close.
"Sherard did a great job once again of taking care of the football," said Coach Reese. "He took what the defense gave him and didn't try to do too much."
The Venom jumped out early and never looked back as Arseel Shakoor forced a fumble on the opening kickoff. The fumble was recovered by Venom wide receiver/defensive back DonTa Bright setting up the offense deep in Arizona territory to start the game. Just four plays later Marcus Robinson would punch it in on the ground for the first Venom points of the game.
On the Adrenaline's next offensive possession, Quarterback Dennis Havrilla would throw an interception to Edward Cantrell on 4th down which would set the Venom up in Arizona territory once again. This time the Venom would come away with a field goal and a 9-0 lead.
"We came out and set the tone early which I thought was important because we didn't do that last week," said Coach Reese. "We forced a couple of turnovers which gave us a short field and the offense took advantage."
The Adrenaline would pull back within three points after a Robert Jones touchdown run, but the Venom would answer back on the ensuing kickoff. With the score 9-6, Ricky McKinley would return the kickoff to the house extending the Venom lead to ten.
"Our guys did a good job of answering," said Coach Reese. "Anytime they scored or started to get a little momentum, we would come away with a big play and take the momentum right back."
The three-point deficit would be the closest the Adrenaline would get the entire game as they had no answer for the Venom's explosive offense. A touchdown run by Cantrell and a pair of touchdown passes by Ellis would give the Venom a 37-20 lead at the half.
The Venom were not content with the 17-point lead and would pick up where they left off in the second half. Ellis would throw two more touchdown passes giving him a total of four for the game, Robinson and Kyle Wilson would tack on rushing touchdowns, and then the icing on the cake was the Venom's final points of the game when Bryant Lee threw a touchdown to Melvin Bryant on a trick play toss pass.
"It's always good to get a win, but there are some things I am not happy with," said Daniel Snyder, the Venom's defensive coordinator. "We gave up 32 points, which is a lot more than I feel like we should have."
The Venom returns home Monday, June 6th, as they face the Bricktown Brawlers at Coors Light Field. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with the Coors Light Tailgate Party kicking off at 5:30 p.m. on the corner of Johnson and 3rd street.
Tickets can be purchased through the Venom's front office, located at 901 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo or by calling (806)350-7277. They can also be purchased at any United Supermarkets location, online at www.panhandletickets.com, or at the Amarillo Civic Center Box Office the day of the game.
